Day 5 and 6

Broome

sunny 35 °C

Arrived Broome around midday and straight away found a campsite. We are at the Beachfront Caravan and Camping Park. We are virtually on the beach with just a low seawall between us and the water.

The first day here was mainly just setting up the camp, and relaxing.

Late last night a thunder storm came through giving us an impressive light show. Both the tent and camper withstood the onslaught, and no leaks were apparent after the rain.

This morning it was more humid than yesterday but this afternoon isn't too bad.

Brother and SIL went on the Willies Creek Pearl Farm tour this arvo. We did that one before so we had half a day to ourselves.

Day 4

Sandfire

sunny 35 °C

After De Grey River it was an easy drive to Sandfire Roadhouse. We stopped at Pardoo but because it was still early we carried on.

Sandfire is much much better than Nanutarra, but not as good as Billabong.

Sandfire has resident peacocks, rooster, camel, kangaroo.

An uneventful night.

Day 3

De Grey River

sunny 35 °C

After Nanutarra we called in at Fortescue Roadhouse for breakfast, then drove to South Hedland where we refuelled, the drove to the De Grey River crossing for the night.

This particular spot I knew from when I worked at Goldsworthy Mining. It is a fabulous spot as the photos will show you.

It was a very hot and humid night and strangely, no mosquito's. We were within earshot of the bridge and could hear the roadtrains approaching and passing on the bridge.

In the morning we had some locals visit, see pics.

Day 2

To Nanutarra

sunny 33 °C

Day 2 we drove from Billabong through to Nanutarra Roadhouse. Another long drive, fortunately I'm not the only driver.

Carnarvon is still a good place not to be, really showing growing pains. I must say though that the plantations have recovered well from the floods a couple of years ago. The road system has been improved also. If you have an auxiliary diesel tank in the back of the ute don't go to the Caltex Woolworths servo.

Did a little shopping in Carnarvon the n headed off again.

Nanutarra Roadhouse used to be the only one between Carnarvon and Hedland, and was OK. It is now the pits. You are better off driving a little further to Fortescue River Roadhouse which is very nice.

Nanutarra are EXPENSIVE for EVERYTHING. Dearest fuel so far is at Nanutarra @ $1.9999. Meals $32-$33, beer cheaper than soft drink.
A Donger is $120/night.

Glad to get out of there.

Day 1

To Billabong

sunny 30 °C

We got away from home at 8.30 AM after the usual have we got this, have we got that, and still leaving some things behind.

We drove through to Billabong Roadhouse, via Brand Highway to Geraldton, and Northampton.

To save time (and being a little lazy) we stated in motel rooms at the roadhouse and dined in the pub. What a great little oasis. Highly recommend to anyone travel the North West Coastal Highway.
